Clad Plates - Pre Bonding Operation

Base Plates

  • The base plate is selected as per clients specification either from our stock or ordered on stockists / Mills.
  • ICEM stocks SA516GR60/65/70 N Plates of Western Europe origin in-house from 10mm to 100 mm thk.
  • The base plate is offered to TPI for stamping and subsequently cut as per desired sizes on CNC cutting machine.


Clad Sheets

  • ICEM stocks coils in SS 304/304L & 316/316L of Western Europe origin in 2000 mm width.
  • Coils are converted to desired Plate by de-coiler.


Clad Sheet Welding

  • ICEM has developed technique of double welders to weld 4mm sheets to arrest distortion and to achieve required flatness for good bonding.


Surface Preparation

  • Plate surfaces are ground or polished to achieve uniform white metal finish. Surface contaminants, oxides and impurities are cleaned by chemical process.


Assembly

  • Clad Plates are positioned on above base Plates.
  • Base Plates and Clad Plates are Separated by Aluminium spacers of equal dimension.
  • Explosive are uniformly distributed on Clad Plate. Quantity of Explosive depends upon the thickness of Plates.

Clad Plates - Explosion Bonding

  • Explosion Bonding is performed in a remote isolated area.
  • Explosive is ignited at the centre using a high velocity Booster.
  • Detonations travels away from the initial point & across the Plate surface at the specified detonation rate.
  • Clad sheet collides with base Plate at a specific velocity and impact angle.
  • Pressure is created at the immediately approaching adjacent surface which are sufficient to take away thin layer of metal from each surface and eject it away in a jet.
  • Thin layer of Macro fusion is formed which looks like wavy weld line.
  • At the collision point, the newly created clean Metal surface impact at high pressure of several Gpa which forces metals into intimate contact while metallurgical weld solidifies across the complete surface.
  • Although there is much heat generated in the explosive detonation, there is no time for heat transfer to the metal. The result is an ideal metal to metal bond without melting or diffusion.
  • Explosion Bonding creates Metallurgical Bond of High Integrity is confined to a narrow weld region and leaves the original metal structures, Cold -Working , Dispersion or Precipitation Hardening - essentially undisturbed.
  • In simple words, we claim that Explosion Bonding Process is a Cold Process in which inherited properties of Parent Materials do not get disturbed or changed, except developed Stress due to Cold Work which can be pacified by Heat Treatment (Stress Relieving).

Clad Plates - Post Banding Operation

Heat Treatment

Explosion Bonding is performed in a remote isolated area.

Straightening

Plates with thk less than 50mm are straightened on Rolling Machine. Plates with thk more than 50mm are straightened on Hydraulic Machine.

Edge Cutting

Plates are cut to desired size on CNC cutting Machine.

U.T

After Explosion Bonding Plates are Ultrasonically tested for Bonding Quality as per SA578 level C + S1 + S7

Repair

Unbonded area are repaired by Weld Overlay.

Test coupon testing

Clad coupon testing as per ASME SA264/265,B432 are carried out in laboratory under TPI.

Surface Preparation

Acid cleaning and Passivation of Clad surface done prior to packing.

Inspection

We offer final product to TPI/Client Representative for final dimensions inspection and document review as per code requirement.

Packing

Clad Plates are packed in corrugated paper and scratch free surface protection with self sticking covering.

  • Stamped coupon are drawn from the original plate to carry out the tests.
  • All Mechanical & Chemical tests are carried out as per the required Technical Delivery Conditions of the Clad Plates.
  • Testings are carried out in NABL accredited Laboratories under appointed Third Party Inspection agency.
  • The most common test conducted on specimen are Bend, Shear & Tensile.
  • LABS also carry out tests like Impact, Hardness, HIC, SSC, SSCC, PMI.
